Toluene is a colorless, flammable, hydrocarbon liquid. It is part of the aromatic family of hydrocarbons. Toluene is primarily used in paints and coatings, printing inks, adhesives, and flexible foams. It is also widely used as a gasoline blendstock to increase octane. MPC produces nitration grade toluene.
Production Information MPC produces nitration grade toluene at the Catlettsburg (Kentucky) and Galveston Bay (Texas) refineries. Toluene, along with the other aromatics, is produced using a liquid-liquid extraction process. The Catlettsburg refinery utilizes the Sulfolane process. The Galveston Bay refinery uses both a Sulfolane process and the Udex process with a Carom co-solvent.
Transportation MPC transports nitration grade toluene by transport truck and rail out of the Catlettsburg refinery and by barge from the Catlettsburg and Galveston Bay refineries.
